Product Details: Seneca Village was a 19th Century settlement of African American landowners in what would now be considered Manhattan, NY. Free African Americans founded the village in 1825, and the village existed until around 1857 when settlers were demanded to leave under eminent domain which ultimately gave way for the construction of Central Park. Seneca Village was known as Manhattan's first significant settlement of African American property owners and the epicenter of black political power.
