Phyllis Wheatley: She was the first African-American author and the second woman to publish a book of poetry. She was a slave who was educated and encouraged to read and write. By the age of 18, Phillis had written 28 poems to publish.
Maya Angelou: She was a writer, poet, performer, social and civil rights activist, and teacher. In 2000, Angelou was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Bill Clinton. In 2010, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the U.S., by President Barack Obama. She was awarded over 50 honorary degrees before her death.
Gwendolyn Brooks: She is one of the most influential, and widely read poets of 20th-century American poetry. She had the distinction of being the first Black author to win the Pulitzer Prize. Gwendolyn was also the poetry consultant to the Library of Congress, and was the first Black woman to hold that position. She was also the poet laureate of the State of Illinois.
