James Baldwin is an influential Black author and activist. He published his first novel, "Go tell it on the Mountain" in 1953, which was influenced by his experiences with class and religion. Though his relationship with his stepfather was contentious James would follow in his footsteps and become a minister, giving sermons to large congregations. However, due to the systemic racism from the institution, James eventually decided to leave the church.
