The community was economically prosperous and flourished as a cultural mecca. On May 31, 1921 a white mob that had been empowered by local enforcement rioted and decimated the 35 square blocks of businesses, churches, schools, hospitals in this district. This day is known as the Tulsa Race Massacre.
