On April 6, 1909, U.S. citizens Matthew Alexander Henson, Robert Edwin Pears, and four Inuit assistants, became the first human beings to set foot on the North Pole. Henson and Peary had been attempting to reach the Pole for the previous 18 years. Henson was the first of the group to reach the North Pole. Henson's contributions were finally recognized in 1937, long after Peary was recognized.
